What is the Glymphatic System
The glymphatic system is a network that clears waste products, toxins and excess proteins from (like beta-amyloid) from the brain.
It relies on the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through spaces around the brain cells to remove waste
The name glymphatics come from the glial cells (support brain cells) that play a central role.
How do they work
The glymphatic system is most active during sleep, especially deep sleep (non REM stages)
CSF flows into the brain along arteries, exchanges with interstitial fluid (fluid between cells) and collects waste
The waste-laden fluid exits the brain along veins and is transported to the lymphatic system for disposal
